When it comes to propositions, some of the UFC fights become a little more difficult to handicap, because it becomes more than just a matter of picking a winner; you have to get a little more exact than that. Here we have that kind of situation as Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin hook up in a battle of genuine UFC stars as the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

I don't think you want to get too crazy with the "Any Other Result" stuff here, even though I think that the -2500 that Griffin will not stop Silva in the first round is not necessarily a bad bet. My feeling is that Silva will win the fight with his experience and his vast repertoire, but that doesn't necessarily mean that, even if you picked the round, you have to stick with that when betting props. You have to look at things in relation to the price offered and any possible value there. Heck, you could even go with the other guy is the price looks good enough.

I'm going to give you some examples. I see that Anderson Silva is the same +325 at BetUS to win the fight in both the first and second rounds, and of course I could envision a scenario where Silva could come out and blitz Griffin with some strikes early on, especially if Griffin rushes him. You can tell that the opinion of the oddsmakers, who have Silva as a pretty solid favorite, is that Griffin may be able to take this fight beyond the first round, but he's less likely to take it into the third round. That is why you actually have HIGHER prices on Silva stopping or submitting Griffin in the third round. They just don't figure Griffin to get that far.

Therefore, the first-round price on Silva should be lower than it is. We know that a lot of these UFC fights don't get out of the first round, even if there is a very formidable underdog. If they do, the favored fighter sometimes has to have his patience tested. This price, though, should probably be a bit lower on a first-round win by Silva, so at +325, maybe we're getting some value there.

I think that in evaluating these prices, the third-round number on Griffin, at +1100 in the BetUS props, has some attractiveness as well. Griffin is known as a guy with a lot of guts and staying power and my feeling is that if he is going to win this fight, it is going to be because he is able to make Silva, who hasn't bee pushed his last two fights, expend some energy and wear himself out. This factor becomes somewhat magnified since Silva is fighting in a higher weight class (the light heavyweights). So we may want to take a chance as well on that 11/1 in the BetUS proposition odds on Forrest being able to turn back Silva with a third-round victory.
