Long shot Tennis bets at the US Open

Bookmark and Share by BetUS Staff

Flushing Meadows, New York – The depth in men’s tennis today is staggering, suggesting that the results will not always fall in line with the tennis odds bookies set. Wimbledon featured some spectacular upsets when a string of top seeds on both the women and men’s front ended up on the chopping block in the early stages of the tournament. It follows then there may be some similar long shot bets with great angles for profit that will send many a sports betting fan laughing to the bank, a big payout in hand.

Here is a look at several long shot bets that I have selected that may or may not (no guarantee of course) come through for the online tennis betting community.

Tennis Betting Line:

David Ferrer -1000 Andreas Beck +500

Match Time 11:00 AM Eastern Time, Thursday August 28, 2008

Tennis Betting Analysis: Last year, David Ferrer had a memorable summer hard court season, highlighted by reaching the quarters at the Cincinnati Masters (l. to Davydenko) and the semis at the US Open (l. to Djokovic). To cap the year, he reached the Tennis Masters Cup final (l. to Federer). This year though, Ferrer has had in comparison a disappointing summer hard court swing. He reached the second round of the ATP Masters Series in Canada and fell in the opening round of the Cincinnati Masters. In Beijing, he fell in the opening round. At the US Open Ferrer enters as the fourth seed. Because he reached the semis last year he has a lot of points to defend which also means added pressure on top of being one of the top ten favourites in the tournament.

Now on paper, Andreas Beck, who weighs in at No.122 in the world, is a complete mismatch for the Spaniard. But the 6’3” tall lefty from Germany may prove to be a tricky opponent for Ferrer, one he did not count on and perhaps not as easily to defeat as some might think. Andreas Beck took out John Isner in the first round in straight sets – an encouraging start to his US Open campaign as he beat one of America’s hopefuls in Isner. On the lower circuit, he won one event in Sarajevo(hard) and finished runner-up in Heilbronn (carpet).

Tennis Betting Verdict: Ferrer is notorious for bouts of shaky confidence. Although he is a dogged fighter on court, rarely losing without giving it his all, he can sometimes mentally get down on himself too soon and check out of a match. This has happened less lately than in his earlier years but sometimes reoccurs. Given that he has not been in his best match playing form, losing prematurely during the US Open series events, Beck has a real shot of orchestrating a big upset. At +500 long shot odds, he is simply a bet too tasty to ignore.

Tennis Free Picks: Becks in four sets

Tennis Wagering Line: Andrey Golubev +600 David Nalbandian -1200

Tennis Betting Analysis: David Nalbandian of Argentina is another player who salvaged a relatively poor season last year in the latter months. During the fall portion, he came out of nowhere, picking up an incredible momentum that saw him seize the Madrid and Paris Masters events, beating the top triplet in tennis en route to both titles – Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal (twice) and Novak Djokovic (once).

In 2008, Nalbandian has had a modest year. Seemingly taking the summer months off Nalbandian has not competed in any hard court event aside from the Beijing Olympics wherein he reached the R16 and lost to Gael Monfils. He is not in his best match playing form and as such may be in danger of falling in the early stages (if not in this match then soon).

Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan is a long shot bet in every sense of the way. Spending most of his time in the challenger circuit, he won one event on carpet. Aside from that, he has not had a noteworthy year. He enters the draw on a lucky loser pass. He made good use of it in the first round, beating American Brendan Evans.

Tennis Gambling Verdict: Nalbandian has not seen much tournament action this summer. Wimbledon saw him fall in the opening round to No. 95 Frank Dancevic. He did not look particularly great in his opener against Marcos Daniel even though he won in straight sets. If he does not take his second round opponent seriously, he could very well be bumped out of the US Open before the tournament really gets going.

Tennis Free Picks: Golubev in five sets
