Juan Martin Del Potro wins the U.S Open over Federer

Juan Martin Del Potro has pulled off the unthinkable, beating Roger Federer in the U.S. Open final. In a classic 5 set match that was full of twists and turns, the Argentine, who is ranked 6th in the world, outlasted Federer to win his first Grand Slam 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

The match was not without controversy as Federer showed some edginess, even cursing at the umpire during the changeover as he complained that Del Potro was given too long to consider a challenge on game point.

Federer was a large betting favorite going into this match at -450 to +275 for Del Potro.

Roger Federer looked in control as he was up two sets to one, one set away from winning his sixth successive U.S. Open title. Unfortunately for him, Juan Martin del Potro didn’t give up.

It looked as though he was all but done when he doubled-faulted the last two points of the third set to give the Swiss a 6-3 6-7 6-4 lead.

The 20-year-old Argentine, appearing in his first grand slam final, looked very nervous in the first set but came back to win the second-set tie break 7-5. Federer came back to win the third set and many, including me assumed the match was all but over but Juan Martin showed heart and determination by winning another tie-breaker in the fourth. He used that momentum in the fifth set and took the deciding set 6-2 to capture his first Grand Slam victory of his young career.
