Super Bowl History
The Super Bowl is as close to an American tradition as you can
get, right up there with the Daytona 500, apple pie and Hooters.
It’s been over 40 years since Bart Starr lead
the Green Bay Packers over the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 way back in
1967 at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. Over the
years there have been some plays that will last forever, relived as
un-imaginable plays that stand above the rest.
As we approach Super Bowl XLIII, here is a list of the top four
moments in Super Bowl history:
4. Dolphins perfect season - 1972
The only undefeated team in NFL history (sorry New England) is the
'72 Dolphins. Much like their season, they played nearly perfect
football in beating the Washington Redskins 14-7.
3. Vinatieri's boot stuns the Rams - 2002
It is the only Super Bowl to be won on the very last play of the
game. It came via Adam Vinatieri, who drilled the 48-yard
field-goal and silenced the greatest show on turf. It is still
regarded as one of the Super Bowl's biggest ever upsets as the Rams
were 14 point favorites. Brady earned Most Valuable Player honors
as he was 16 of 27 for 145 yards and one touchdown which began a
very prosperous era in New England.
2. The Giant comeback - 2000
New England (18-1) was one play away from perfection. I doubt that
Eli Manning and David Tyree have any bigger fans in the world than
the 1972 Miami Dolphins who can boast that their perfect record is
still the only perfect season in the Super Bowl era. The Giants
played well enough to win the game but it was the escape by Manning
and the catch by Tyree that seals this moment as one of the
greatest in Super Bowl history.
1. Montana - 1989
A Cincinnati field goal put the Bengals up 16-13 with just 3:10
left on the clock when Montana took over at their 8-yard line. The
next 10 plays saw San Francisco march 82 yards down the field to
the Cincinnati 10, and with just 34 seconds remaining, with one of
the more classic pitch and catches in Super Bowl history, Montana
hit Taylor in the back of the end zone for one of the biggest
catches in 49ers history.
