College Football Week 9 Heisman Watch– Tebow Falling Fast With Poor Stats
1. Jimmy Clausen (QB) – Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Despite the Fighting Irish’s lulls in the season, Clausen’s stock has only risen. Part of that is because the caliber of Heisman candidates isn’t that high, and big name schools like USC keep dropping like flies. Clausen was terrific against Boston College, completing 66.7 percent of his passes for 246-yards and two touchdowns. That bridges the 2,000-yard mark so far. With more big games, he can hit the 3,000 yard mark...and guess who he gets to play next…
Next Game: Navy vs. Notre Dame
2. Mark Ingram (RB) – Alabama Crimson Tide
Ingram’s got the best numbers of running-backs attached to the top programs. Of the top-10 overall, Ingram ranks 6th in total yards, and despite having a low amount of touchdowns, he’s the best player on the second-best program in the country. Ingram is the upset special if Alabama can clinch the SEC title. The LSU run defense isn’t going to make it easy for Ingram, but on a national stage on Saturday afternoon, Ingram has the chance to be special.
Next Game: LSU vs. Alabama (-9)
3. Colt McCoy (QB) – Texas Longhorns
The Devil is on McCoy’s side after a season best performance against Missouri. If the BCS started today, then it would be Texas vs. Florida for the championship. Why? Because the pollsters aren’t going to subjugate fans to two Alabama-Florida title games in the span of a month. If Texas gets in to the BCS and McCoy can improve on his numbers, then his maturation in his senior year will hit a pinnacle and his draft stock will never be higher.
Next Game: Central Florida vs. Texas
4. Case Keenum (QB) – Houston Cougars
Keenum is the Graham Harrell and Timmy Chang of college football right now. A quarterback that’s a bit too short (he’s only 6-foot-1) playing in a pass heavy offense (he leads the league with 398 attempts), who plays in a moderately soft division. Sure the Cougars are 7-1 SU, but who cares? Keenum’s numbers have to breach the 5,000 yard mark but even then what’s the big deal? There’s no way in hell that Keenum’s Cougars even get a nod of recognition from the BCS so what’s it really done for him?
Next Game: Houston (-3) vs. Tulsa
5. Kellen Moore (QB) – Boise State Broncos
Moore is one of the best passers in the college ranks, and his Broncos are undefeated. When he needed a big game to stay relevant in the race, he delivered in Hawaii’s face with 223-yards and 5 touchdowns. Now he’s in the lead for touchdowns in the nation. The only problem here is that his passing yards are a reflection of the kind of matchups he’s getting privileged to by playing in the WAC conference. He has just 1,627 yards on the season.
Next Game: Boise State (-19.5) vs. Louisiana Tech
6. Tim Tebow (QB) – Florida Gators
Tebow’s Gators are in the lead of the BCS Standings, but it certainly isn’t off his production. Football Jesus threw for just 127-yards against Mississippi State and dialed in two more picks. With only eight touchdown passes on the year, and a drop in his rushing touchdowns thanks to a mid-season concussion, Tebow will get votes based on his name value alone. But he has to step up in the final weeks of the season and catch up to the quarterbacks who are simply putting up monster numbers.
Next Game: Vanderbilt vs. Florida (-32.5)
7. Darryl Clark (QB) – Penn State Nittany Lions
Clark is being haunted by a terrible game against Iowa, but the Penn State Lions are knocking on the door of the top-10 in the BCS. His numbers this season are competitive. With 1,884 yards and 17 touchdowns, along with four rushing touchdowns, Clark deserves a mention in the Heisman Race. So there it is. I hope you enjoyed it, Darryl. Good luck against The Sweater Vest.
Next Game: OSU vs. Penn State (-3.5)
