Atlanta Hawks

  • Over 44½ Wins -110
  • Under 44½ Wins -120

-- Well, it's not as if the Hawks have made earth-shaking personnel moves, but they have a roster that is basically very young, and it is developing. The emergence started in the playoffs two season ago, when they gave Boston life-and-death in the first round, then continued as they won 47 games. The upward surge may continue. OVER 44.5 (-110) ***

Boston Celtics

  • Over 57½ Wins -125
  • Under 57½ Wins -105

-- I am looking for a big Celtic comeback this year, and the veterans like Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and now Rasheed Wallace probably realize this is the last hurrah for them to win it as a team. The bench depth will once again be a prominent factor. OVER 57.5 (-125) ***

Charlotte Bobcats

  • Over 36½ Wins -115
  • Under 36½ Wins -115

-- There is no doubt in my mind that the Bobcats have the capability to make the playoffs, and Larry Brown is a coach with a history of success that is unquestioned. However, they don't have that player who can get them a lot fo easy baskets underneath. That hurts them. UNDER 36.5 (-115) *

Chicago Bulls

  • Over 41½ Wins -115
  • Under 41½ Wins -115

-- The Bulls are handicapped without a guy to muscle his way through the paint, but they have skill and grit, not to mention great experience from last year's playoff battle with Boston. Maybe I think more of Derrick Rose right now than most people. OVER 41.5 (-115) ***

Cleveland Cavaliers

  • Over 61½ Wins -120
  • Under 61½ Wins -110

-- This is a very big number. One injury to one of the top three players could be enough to put a team into the kind of slump that could ruin this thing right away. Are we counting on a 37-year-old center to push this team over the top? I would rather go with the underdog price here. UNDER 61.5 (-110) **

Detroit Pistons

  • Over 40½ Wins -120
  • Under 40½ Wins -110

-- With their personnel moves, the Pistons are left with a shell of what they had before. They're now just like any other team - a lot of guys with some talent and some numbers, but very few who have proven they can win. UNDER 40.5 (-110) ***

Indiana Pacers

  • Over 34½ Wins -115
  • Under 34½ Wins -115

-- I know that the Pacers shape up as a team that once again will play at a fast pace, but so what? Dahntay Jones and Earl Watson can play defense, but they're exceptions to the rule, and they aren't going to be among the leaders in minutes played. You really have to have racehorses, and maybe a better point guard, to play the kind of style they do and be successful. UNDER 34.5 (-115) **

Miami Heat

  • Over 40½ Wins -115
  • Under 40½ Wins -115

-- You'd like to think that a team with Dwyane Wade on it, and which doesn't collapse under the weight of injuries, could be a playoff participant. The Heat is not so deep and not so strong, and though they may sneak into the eighth seed, it might be with a sub-.500 record. UNDER 40.5 (-115) **

Milwaukee Bucks

  • Over 26½ Wins -115
  • Under 26½ Wins -115

-- I wonder if they are going to use this season to break in Brandon Jennings, the first-round draft pick, at the point guard spot. That may mean a step back before taking steps forward, UNDER 26.5 (-115) **

New Jersey Nets

  • Over 28½ Wins -105
  • Under 28½ Wins -125

-- Another team that is clearing cap space for LeBron, and may have the inside track with part-owner Jay-Z, if friendship means anything. They'll be neck-and-neck with the Knicks, in the standings and in those negotiations. OVER 28.5 (1-05) *

New York Knicks

  • Over 31½ Wins -110
  • Under 31½ Wins -120

-- They're just biding their time while the "Countdown to LeBron" continues. UNDER 31.5 (-120) ***

Orlando Magic

  • Over 57½ Wins -115
  • Under 57½ Wins -115

-- This one is tricky, because their major personnel addition, Vince Carter, has not generally been known as a player who makes everyone around him better. That is particularly important in this case because the guy who departed, Hedo Turkoglu, was just that kind of player, and one who could sink the clutch three-pointer to boot. UNDER 57.5 (-115) **

Philadelphia 76ers

  • Over 40½ Wins -115
  • Under 40½ Wins -115

-- I think the Sixers are essentially a good fundamental team, and with the Princeton-style offense brought in by the new coach, Eddie Jordan, the impact of having to replace point guard Andre Miller is lessened to an extent. If they get better out of Elton Brand than they did last year, this is going to be a team that gets in with the sixth or seventh seed. Are they a .500 team? Yes. OVER 40.5 (-115) ***

Toronto Raptors

  • Over 40½ Wins -120
  • Under 40½ Wins -110

-- The Raptors, in my estimation, have a bigger upside than Philadelphia because they have more functioning parts in place, including a point guard (Jose Calderon) who minimizes turnovers and a power forward in Chris Bosh who is definitely going to put up some numbers. Add the presence of Turkoglu, rookie DeMar DeRizan and key reserve Jarrett Jack and this is a team that is going to not only be a playoff team, but possibly a high-level playoff team. OVER 40.5 (-120) ****

Washington Wizards

  • Over 41½ Wins -130
  • Under 41½ Wins Even

-- The Wizards made a wise move by first hiring a capable coach in Flip Saunders. Then they sought to augment their offense attack by bringing in Mike Miller and Randy Foye. Fabricio Oberto gives them a guy who can play some minutes in backing up Brendan Haywood. Gilbert Arenas is back - there is no question that Agent Zero makes a difference. OVER 41.5 (-130) ****
