MLB Word Series Game 2 Pick – Phillies at Yankees

Bookmark and Share by Eric Williams

After nailing both of my picks on the Game 1 matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees, and improving to a blistering 20-6 SU mark this postseason, I am back with what should amount to two more winning wagers for tonight’s Game 2 showdown.

Cliff Lee absolutely dominated the Yankees’ prolific batting order, tossing a complete game without allowing an earned run, while striking out 10 batters in an overpowering performance. Tonight, the Phillies will turn to veteran right-hander Pedro Martinez looking to take a commanding 2-0 lead while New York counters with right-hander A.J. Burnett.

Here is a look at the key trends and MLB Odds for Game 2, followed by my in-depth analysis and expert MLB Free Picks.

  • Phillies are 4-0 in their last 4 World Series games.
  • Phillies are 4-0 in their last 4 overall.
  • Phillies are 5-1 in their last 6 playoff games as an underdog.
  • Phillies are 8-2 in Martinez’s last 10 starts.
  • Yankees are 5-0 in their last 5 interleague games vs. a right-handed starter.
  • Yankees are 5-1 in their last 6 playoff home games.
  • Yankees are 8-1 in Burnett’s last 9 home starts vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Yankees are 11-2 in Burnett’s last 13 home starts.
  • Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings.
  • Under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in New York.

MLB Odds

  • Philadelphia Phillies +1 1.2 -115
  • Pedro Martinez –R +175
  • New York Yankees -1 ½ -105
  • A.J. Burnett –R -210
  • Over 9 +105
  • Under 9 -125

The Starters: Pedro Martinez has gone 0-1 over his last three starts with a 3.86 ERA while A.J. Burnett has gone 0-0 with a 4.42 ERA over his last three starts.

Analysis: Just like Game 1, I’m advising my MLB baseball betting buddies that this pick is a lot easier than some would have you think.

Philadelphia absolutely pounded Yankees’ right-hander A.J. Burnett on May 22, knocking Burnett around for five earned runs on eight hits – including three home runs – in just six innings of which resulted in a 7-3 Phillies win. I believe the Phillies are going to bash Burnett’s brains in again tonight.

While I’m certainly not expecting Philly’s Pedro Martinez to put on a Cliff Lee-like performance in this contest, I do think the veteran right-hander will be very effective as he was in his powerful seven-inning, two-hit, shutout stint in Game 2 of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

While the Yankees have gone a perfect 5-0 in their last five interleague games versus a right-handed starter and 5-1 in their last six playoff home games, they will be facing an even more confident Philadelphia team tonight and one that has gone a perfect 4-0 in their last four World Series games, an identical 4-0 in their last four games overall and an equally impressive 5-1 in their last six playoff games as an underdog.

New York has also recorded a stellar 8-1 record in Burnett’s last nine home starts versus a team with a winning record and stellar 11-2 mark in Burnett’s last 13 home starts, but I still like the fact that the Phils have gone a blistering 8-2 in Pedro Martinez’s last 10 starts.

While the Under has gone a perfect 5-0 in the last five meetings between these teams and 5-0 in the last five ballgames in New York, I like the Over tonight as Burnett gets pounded and the Yankees get to Martinez for a run or two and the Phillies’ relievers for another couple of runs.

Call me crazy (it wouldn’t be the first time), but I like the Phillies to take a commanding 2-0 lead over the Yankees tonight while the final score plays just Over tonight’s 9-run O/U total.
