Steve Phillips Caught Cheating - Career Likely Done with ESPN

Steve Phillips, ESPN “Baseball Tonight” analyst, is taking a “leave of absence” according to the network after an affair he had with a former ESPN production assistant became downright scary.

According to reports, and Phillips’ own admission, he had three sexual encounters with a 22 year old named Brooke Hundley (click to see pictures of Brooke Hundley) during the summer but broke it off in July. According to a New York Post report, Hundley, 22, didn’t take the break up very well. She began harassing Phillips and his family and things turned scary in a hurry.

Among some of the things that Hundley did was befriend Phillips’ teenage son on Facebook and try to gather information on the family, and leave a letter at Phillips’ house detailing the affair and discussing Phillips’ family. Hundley was spotted by Phillips’ wife leaving their home quickly and erratically, smashing into a pole as she attempted to get away from the Phillips’ home.

According to Hundley, she and Steve have been seeing each other for “awhile” and that she isn’t some “random girl he’s been having sex week, but actually a “close friend who has been working with him (Steve) on a daily basis”.

She also explained to Phillips’ wife, Marni, that Steve likes to be with her more because she “has more of a passion and drive to do something with her life” as opposed to Mrs. Phillips who spent her entire life doing nothing but taking care of Steve and raising his son. Hundley did say that Steve is “glad” Marni “decided to stay at home” but she still feels that Steve enjoys being with her more because of her “passion and drive”.

Hundley also didn’t write the letter and hand deliver it to the Phillips’ home to “hurt” Marni “in any way”. She just wants Mrs. Phillips to see that she is “a real person” and that she “cares deeply about his happiness” which is, of course, why she befriended Phillips’ son on Facebook in order to glean information about the family.

It’s important to note that like Steve, Marni and Phillips’ teenage son, Brooke Hundley was raised “Catholic too” and while she knows that “our (every individual involved in this ridiculous mess!) faith dissuades us from divorce” it also respects it “with regards to infidelity because should have the opportunity to be whomever makes them happy and can give them what they need”.

Finally, Hundley went on to write that, yes, she is only 22 but she is “not stupid” and that it is up to Steve if he “wants to stay in a loveless marriage just for the kids or to move on and be with someone who makes him feel better than he’s ever felt”. Oh yes, that and the fact that Steve has an interesting birthmark in an interesting place in his thigh, pretty much sums up what Hundley wrote about Phillips.

What does this mean for “Baseball Tonight”? Nothing, really. There are a lot of guys that can do what Phillips did. Nobody, save for baseball fans, really cared and even then there’s a debate on how much they cared about Phillips’ analysis every night.

For Phillips, the “leave of absence” no doubt will turn into a resignation of some sort. Phillips’ reputation isn’t just tarnished, it’s absolutely smashed. He did one of the worst things possible that a father could do to his children and a man to his family. It wasn’t the divorce; it was the fact that he put his family in danger. Hundley’s letter and actions are proof that she isn’t thinking straight and could be capable of almost anything.

Hundley is obviously a loose cannon, but so is Steve Phillips. Only a loose cannon would get into bed with someone as disturbed as Brooke Hundley. ESPN, whose parent company is Disney, has no choice but to quietly get him out of their “family” for good.

When Marv Albert was caught doing some strange things to a hooker in a hotel room, he was suspended by NBC but returned soon after it was discovered that basketball fans just didn’t care if Marv had a predilection for biting women of the night. They liked Marv.

Phillips doesn’t have that kind of pull because he was an analyst on a little seen sports show. Looking at the big picture, his presence was neither here nor there. Replace Phillips with another 40 something baseball expert and “Baseball Tonight” won’t miss a beat.

We won’t be seeing Steve Phillips anywhere for a while. Mickey Mouse will make sure of that.
