Golf: USPGA Championship Top 10

Tee-off: 8/13/2009

Sometimes the best thing to do as a gambler is to look for wagers that could yield nice profits with very little risk.

Such is the case when betting on golfers to finish in the Top 10 instead of winning a PGA Event. Of course, like most of the time in the world of sports gambling, things don’t always work out the way they’re supposed to. Take for instance the time that Tiger Woods didn’t make the cut in the British Open but was a -700 wager in the sportsbook to finish in the Top 10.

Let’s take a look at some of the contenders to finish in the Top 10 in the 2009 USPGA Championship.

2009 USPGA Championship to Finish in the Top 10

1. Steve Stricker +225 - - His 6th place finish in the WGC-Bridgestone this past week was his 8th Top 10 finish out of 18 events played in 2009. That’s not 50% but its good enough for me because Stricker also finished 6th in the Masters this year which was the only time he played under good conditions in a major. Stricker’s game is predicated upon good conditions. If he gets them this week at Hazeltine, a Top 10 finish should be likely.

2. Phil Mickelson +145 - - The odds are somewhat low on Lefty but he finished 5th at the Masters and 2nd at the U.S. Open. He skipped the British Open, but will go into the USPGA with a good prep under his belt. Six Top 10 finishes out of 13 events puts Lefty in the middle of it this week which means he’s a nice bet in this category.

3. Lee Westwood +225 - - Westwood has finished 3rd and 9th in his last two tournaments. He also excelled on the Par 5’s at the WGC-Bridgestone this past week which means that he is ready to fire straight down the fairway at the long Hazeltine course. Westwood is another who must be considered in this category.

4. Tiger Woods -800 - - 10 Top 10 finishes in 12 events in 2009. That’s right…10. Yes, he missed the cut at the British Open but Hazeltine is perfect for his long driver. 10 Top 10 finishes in 12 events in 2009…

5. Kevin Na +1100 - - Yes, he’s played in 21 events this year and has only made the cut in 14 of those but in those 14 cuts made he’s finished in the Top 10 eight times. That’s impressive. So, like always say, if Na makes the cut, he has a great shot, a better than 50% shot, of finishing the Top 10. At 11 to 1, he’s worth serious consideration in this category.

6. Hunter Mahan +225 - - Save for missing the cut in the British Open, Mahan has finished in the Top 10 in 5 out of his last 6 PGA Events. That makes Mahan one of the best wagers in this category. At the odds in this category, bettors must consider a golfer who has gotten really hot at the right time.

Best Long Shot

Rich Beem +2200 - - I know. Who the hell is Rich Beem? Well, he’s the guy who beat Tiger Woods at Hazeltine in 2002. Will he beat Tiger again? Not unless something miraculous happens, but Beem could find some of that old magic and get into the Top 10. At the odds, gamblers should consider his chances.
