ANGEL CABRERA -130
LUCAS GLOVER Even
He doesn't cut the classic figure of an athlete, but ANGEL CABRERA (the -130 favorite at BetUS) has earned his place among the best in golf, and he has done it the hard way. The Argentine started out as a caddy and became a protégé of sorts to countryman Eduardo Romero, and first made an impact on the European Tour, where he has won five times. Cabrera was the 2005 winner of the BMW Championship, and that was his best win as a pro until his victory at the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 2007, where he beat out Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk. At that point, he became the second Argentine to win a major (Roberto DiVincenzo had done so previously).
Another shining moment for him came at the Masters in April, as he went to a three-way playoff with Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry, and got the benefit of a lucky break when his second shot on the first playoff hole hit a tree and rebounded right into the middle of the fairway, saving himself a disaster. On that hole, which was the 18th at Augusta, he eliminated Campbell and then took out Perry on the next hole to win the title. With that win, Cabrera became the first Argentine to win the Masters. The two majors are the only tournaments he has won in America, and he and Woods are the only active players to have won both the U.S. Open and the Masters.
Cabrera has four top ten finishes in the Masters, along with two top ten in both the U.S. Open and British Open. He has not done well in the PGA Championship; his best finish was a tie for 19th in 2000. In three of the last four PGA's he has played in, he has missed the cut. In fact, he has missed the cut in three of his last eight majors.
Cabrera is #27 in the World Golf Rankings, and is seventh on the Tour in driving distance, averaging 305 yards. He ranks 198th in driving accuracy, hitting 50.4% of fairways, and is 132nd in greens in regulation.
LUCAS GLOVER (the even money underdog at BetUS) is another guy who didn't achieve instant success on the PGA Tour, despite an All-America career at Clemson University. Glover was a member of the Nationwide Tour, who had a good enough second season there to get a Tour card. He still had to go back to Q-School (qualifying school) after his rookie season to stay on the circuit.
Glover won more than $2.5 million in 2006, when he also broke the top 25 on the money list. That is the result of nine top ten finishes. He was outside of the top 100 in 2008, when he failed to break the million-dollar mark. This year has been Glover's best yet. Aside from a second at the Quail Hollow Championship and the runner-up spot at the Buick Open, he beat the whole field in the U.S. Open, taking home his first major title and only his second PGA Tour victory overall. He's now eighth on the money list, 20th in the World Golf Rankings, 31st in driving distance (296.6 yards), 51st in driving accuracy, 45th in putts per round and ninth in scoring average (69.65).
Cabrera can be a bit wild off the tee, but at Hazeltine if you hit the ball long you can miss the worst of the rough, so he won't be in as much trouble as one might think. He does have a run over this course, tying for 48th in the PGA back in 2002 at Hazeltine. Of course, there is going to be more rough than there is at Augusta, where he won earlier this year. I like Glover's momentum, though. He's had nine top 25 finishes in 20 events, and can demonstrate the consistency with his driver to keep himself out of big trouble most of the time. I'm going to move with Glover, the even money underdog in the BetUS PGA Championship golf matchup odds.
