Tee-off:  8/27/2009

This week is the first tournament for the FedEx Cup Championship, The Barclays at Liberty National Facility in Jersey City, New Jersey. Wouldn’t you know it,  Tiger Woods is a huge favorite in the BetUS online sportsbook to finish in the Top 10 and the Top 4. Shocker.

Redemption for the PGA Championship starts with The Barclays this week.

Let’s take a look at some of the contenders who could either finish in the Top 10 and/or the Top 4 for this week’s The Barclays.

Golf:  The Barclays Top 10 and Top 4

** Top 10 odds in sportsbook listed first.

  1. Tiger Woods  -800, -350 - - The odds on Tiger, like always, are awful, but if bettor believes that Woods isn’t going to make it into the Top 10, I might personally take the wager.  Tiger will be fired up this week to prove he’s still the best in the business.  A top 10 finish should be a foregone conclusion as El Tigre has been kept out of the Top 10 only twice in 2009.  As far as a Top 4 finish is concerned, I don’t know.  I might pass on that wager at those odds.

  1. Steve Stricker +250, +550 - - Stricker won The Barclays in 2007 and has been consistent enough this year to be considered for a bet in either category.  Yes, he missed the cut at the PGA Championship and finished 52nd at the British Open, but he won the John Deere Classic and the Crowne Plaza Invitational and he finished 6th at the WGC-Bridgestone.  Stricker’s been spending the past two weeks working on that beautiful swing.

  1. Camilo Villegas +550, +1100 - - The odds are excellent on Villegas because he’s been downright terrible in 2009.  The thing that gamblers must remember is that Villegas was downright terrible going into the 2008 FedEx Cup Playoffs as well.  He won two of the four tournaments.  Camilo prepped for The Barclays by playing against Tiger in a skins game on Monday.  That should definitely help his game this week.

  1. Phil Mickelson +150, +400 - - Mickelson is a tough competitor to bet against but he’s also a tough competitor to bet for.  Lefty just didn’t have it in the PGA Championship and now must contend with a number of golfers looking to turn 2009 into a winning one.  The competition will be super intense at The Barclays.  I like Mickelson to bounce back but the +150 odds are too low for me to suggest a wager.  At +400 to finish in the Top 4 is the better wager, but tread carefully when betting Lefty at The Barclays.

  1. Padraig Harrington +120, +250 - - Paddy killed himself again with a triple bogey.  This time it was at the 8th hole in the PGA Championship.  Besides the 8th at the PGA and the 16th at the WGC-Bridgestone, Harrington has been close to excellent in his last two tournaments.  So, a wager on Paddy to finish either in the Top 10 or the Top 4 makes sense.

  1. Lucas Glover +400, +850 - - Glover finished 5th at the PGA and then 24th at the Wyndham Championship.  That appears to be Glover’s modus operandi, one bad tournament, followed by one good tournament, followed by one okay tournament, followed by…gamblers get the idea.  The odds are terrific.  Why not take a swing?

Best Long Shot

Mike Weir +800, +1800 - - The best wager on Weir is definitely to finish in the Top 10.  Weir missed the cut at the PGA Championship, but before that he finished 10th at the WGC-Bridgestone.  Weir could bounce back at The Barclays at 8 to 1 odds and make some money for a few golf betting fans.
