Golf Betting Course Information
- Mercedes Benz Championship
-
Course: Kapalua Resort Plantation Course
Location: Kapalua, Hawaii
Yardage: 7,411The Kapalua Resort hosts Mercedez-Benz Championship, which is the opening event of the PGA Tour each season. Surrounded by the beauty of Hawaii, each hole is engrossed in beautiful and lush foliage.
But the captivating backgrounds should not take away from the difficulty of the course itself. The Plantation Course is dangerously hilly, and players are always hitting up hill or down hill. The greens are temperamental. They can be lightning fast going downhill or lightning slow going uphill. The fairways and the greens are known to be fairly wide.
Of course, with the hole playing along the coast of the Pacific, the winds can be absolutely treacherous. When the winds decide to interject themselves in to play, players will find themselves playing in to the wind at all times.
Still, players have often found the ability to master this course. Ernie Els posted an astounding -31 under par on this course in 2003. Since 1953, Kapalua has been one of the most stunning courses in America. Since 1999 it has been the starting line for the PGA Tour season with the Merecedez-Benz Championship.
- Bob Hope Chrysler Classic
-
Course: La Quinta Golf Country Club, Indian Wells, various
Location: Coachella Valley, California
Yardage: 7,305The Bob Hope Classic is played in the dryness of western California mid January. It has had trouble attracting the big fish of the PGA Tour because of its unique format. The tournament stretches through five days and takes place on four separate courses throughout the Coachella valley.
Furthermore, the first four days are littered with celebrity play. Past Presidents, actors and comedians have all joined in the fun, but that has deterred some pros from playing. Tiger Woods has never entered the Bob Hope Classic.
The Bob Hope Classic is mainly sponsored by Chrysler, which honors the late, great Bob Hope by donating to his various charities.
The Quarry at La Quinta is ranked 47th amongst America’s best golf courses.
- Buick Invitational
-
Course: Torrey Pines Golf Course
Location: La Jolla, California
Yardage: 7,208 South / 6,874 NorthTorrey Pines is a public golf course owned by the city of San Diego, California. It is home to two very famous courses called the North Course and the South Course. Torrey Pines has been the host of the Buick Invitational since 1968.
The North Course is the shorter and easier of the two courses. Players split their time between North and South Courses over the first two days of competition. In the last day of competition, players only play on the South Course.
Since the course is situated atop cliffs that overlook the Pacific Ocean, some of the holes can be seriously affected by the wind. It is one of the most challenging courses in America because of its daunting length and difficult angles.
Tiger Woods has won the Buick Invitational four of the past five years.
- AT&T Pro-Am
-
Course: Pebble Beach Golf Links
Location: Pebble Beach, California
Yardage: 6,799The Pro-Am is played yearly at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. As such, it is victimized year in and year out by dubious rainfall which tends to slow down play. The tournament began in 1937 when it was founded by none other then Bing Crosby and has called Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, Cypress Point Club and Monterey Peninsula Country Club home as well.
Unlike most tournaments, this field begins with an enormous field of 180 professionals and another 180 amateurs. Each pro is paired with a pro-amateur and, after the first 54 holes the Low 70 scores advance past the cut.
Pebble Beach itself is the most famous golf course in the western United States. It was opened in 1919 and has even been altered by Jack Nicklaus himself. It is a challenging course that demands a massive playing fee.
The AT&T Pro-Am attracts some of the biggest names in golf every year due to the prestige of the tournament. Pebble Beach itself is a beatable course on the professional level but the field at the AT&T is always full of stiff competition making it one of the more competitive events of the season.
- Nissan Open
-
Course: Riviera Country Club
Location: Pacific Palisades, California
Yardage: 6,987The Nissan Open was been hosted by the Riviera Country Club since 1973, though it was been hosted by various clubs in California since its inception in 1926. The current home course is a decent 6,987 yards with a par score of 71.
Like other tournaments held early in the year, this tournament falls victim to the rain on occasion. In 2005 the tournament was shortened to a ghastly 36 holes due to rain. Despite this, the tournament has always welcomed consummate pros such as Rory Sabbatini, Mike Weir and Ernie Els.
Riviera Country Club is a study in beauty. It is a mesmerizing course visually that starts in the bowl of the Santa Monica valley and winds upwards. The ragged and difficult bunkers are the signature of the course. Players will do anything to avoid these fatal sand traps.
- Arnold Palmer Invitational
-
Course: Bay Hill Club and Lodge
Location: Orlando, Florida
Yardage: 7,207The Arnold Palmer Invitational was founded in 1966 by – you guessed it – Arnold Palmer himself. It is hosted by the Bay Hill Club and Lodge course he has lived at and owned since 1976.
The Bay Hill is a traditional course that is known for its intimidating par-three holes and its excessively challenging eighteenth hole. Its engineers do a fine job of creating difficult shots for even the cagiest of veterans.
- EDS Byron Nelson Championship
-
Courses: Four Seasons Resort and Club
Location: Irving, Texas
Yardage: 7,022 / 6,847Since the tournament is held in Texas’s absurdly wild spring weather, the tournament is played on the two courses found at the Four Seasons Resort Club in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The Tournament Players Course and the Cottonwood Valley Course host the event, which is named after its first champion, Byron Nelson.
This tournament is perhaps most notable for being the site at which Tiger Woods ended his impressive 142 cuts-made streak. The magnificent $6.3 million purse is enough to attract the biggest names in the game. However, a second tier player usually lucks out and emerges victorious over the bigger names of the course.
The trademark of the Cottonwood Valley course is the dauntingly long first hole, which is a stretched out par four hole. The green is massive, but the backside of the first hole has a massive bunker flanked by water. The pin placement over the entire course is treacherous at best.
- Wachovia Championship
-
Course: Quail Hollow Club
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Yardage: 7,438The Wachovia Championship is one of the youngest tournaments on the PGA Tour, but it is able to lure a number of high level professionals because of its $6.3 million purse. The tournament is also highly noted for its charitable connection to Teach for America.
The young tournament has only been around since 2003. The Quail Hollow Club is the jewel of North Carolina golf and was built by course architect George Cobb in 1961. It is a private club allowing play to members and guests of members only.
- The Players Championship
-
Course: TPC at Sawgrass, Stadium Course
Location: Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
Yardage: 7,093The Players Championship has been around since 1974 and is universally considered to be the fifth major on the PGA Tour. It boasts a huge $9.0 million purse. The winner gets a wealthy cut of the purse and a massive amount of points for the Official World Golf Rankings. It is run by the governing body of the PGA Tour.
Sawgrass’s signature hole is the par 3 on the 17th hole nicknamed the “Island Green”. It is one of golf’s most distinctive and difficult holes. The course is also unique because of its radical “stadium concept”.
The crowds are able to view the action from raised mounds of earth that surround each and every hole, giving spectators a much better view of the action. That is why the course has been named the Stadium Course. It is also brutally difficult.
- The Memorial Tournament
-
Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club
Location: Dublin, Ohio
Yardage: 7,366The Memorial Tournament is also referred to as the Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament because it was conceived by Nicklaus himself. Nicklaus was born and raised in state of Ohio, and it was there that he developed in to one of the greatest golfers of all time.
Nicklaus envisioned that this tournament would honor the steep traditions of the game and recognize the legends that made it what it is today. The tournament itself is intended to blossom in to an event on par with the recognition of the Masters.
The Muirfield course is surrounded by water, despite being in land locked Ohio. Thirteen of its eighteen holes have water hazards. The club is private and the course is noted for its length.
- The AT&T National
-
The AT&T National
Course: Congressional Country Club
Location: Bethesda, Maryland
Yardage: 7,204Not to be confused by the Pro-Am, or the lesser known Classic, The National is the youngest tournament on the tour. It opened in 2007 and is hosted by Tiger Woods himself. This is the first tournament to be hosted in the DC area since 1970.
The course is marked by a vast amount of rolling hills, making fairway play just as difficult as shooting from the rough. Congressional is also punctuated by a par 3 on the eighteenth hole, something that many traditionalists roll their eyes at. This course favors players that can control the accuracy of their long shots, while landing the ball softly so it is not attacked by the angular hills of the topography.
The tournament’s only champion is K.J. Choi of South Korea who won the inaugural event in June 2007. He took home $1.08 million in prize money. Much of the proceeds of the tournament go to the Tiger Woods Foundation charity.
- The Canadian Open
-
Courses: various
Location: Canada, Eh
Yardage: n/aThe Canadian Open has a special place in the tradition and history of the game. Not too long ago, the tournament was considered the third most prestigious behind the British Open and the U.S. Open.
However since the schedule has been shuffled around, the Canadian Open has been sandwiched tightly between the British Open and the World Golf Championships in July. This reduces the number of top flight talent from making the trip north of the border.
Though the tournament reserves a special number of spots for Canadian players, the event has not been won by a Canadian since 1954. The event has been played in Canada since 1908 and remains an important part of the PGA Tour’s history and tradition.
- FedEx Cup Championship
-
The FedEx Cup is a new addition to the PGA Tour. It is a championship trophy that will be introduced in 2007 and can is won by accumulating a series of points throughout the season. Not surprisingly, the championship is sponsored by FedEx.
Throughout the season, players earn points by placing in PGA Tour events, with points varying depending on the tournament. Upon conclusion of the Wyndham Championship, which takes place in mid-August, the top 144 Points Leaders qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
At the beginning of the playoffs, the points are reset and then adjusted on a sliding scale. The top point leader will receive 100,000, second place receives 99,000 and so on. The 144th place point leader receives 84,700 points.
The playoffs are extended over four tournaments spanning over the course of a month from late August to mid September. The four tournaments are the Barclays Classic, the Deutche Bank Championship, the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship
The main draw of the FedEx Cup, besides the prestige of winning the trophy, is the whopping $10 million grand prize for whomever emerges victorious at the conclusion of the Tour Championship. Because of this, all the big names will flock to the FedEx Cup. It is poised to overtake the PGA Championship as the true championship of the PGA Tour.
- The Barclays Classic
-
Course: Westchester Country Club
Location: Rye, New York
Yardage: 7142The Barclays was formerly known as the Westchester Classic, giving honor to its host course. But a series of sponsorship overhauls have led to it being renamed the Barclays Classic.
The Westchester Country Club is split in to two courses. The West Course is 7,142 yards and spans 54 holes. The South Course is a smaller 6,436 yards over 18 holes and was initially designed for women and high handicap golfers. It has since been redesigned to be more competitive.
The top 144 Points Leaders participate in the Barclays. A 36-hole cut to the top 70 plus ties is made halfway through the tournament. The winner of the Barclays
Currently, Vijay Singh is the dominant player at Westchester having won three tournaments there. He won the Barclays Classic in 1993, 1995 and again in 2006.
- Deutsche Bank Championship
-
Course: TPC of Boston
Location: Norton, Massachusetts
Yardage: 7,115The field for the Deutsche Bank is reduced to the top 120 Point Leaders in the FedEx points system.
The Deutsche Bank Championship has been hosted by The Players Club in Boston for several years, and has been part of the PGA Tour since 2003. The TPC in Boston is part of the Player Club franchise and is just as difficult as its counterparts across the nation. It is littered with angled and tight fairways, water hazards galore and difficult pin placement on the greens.
The hefty purse of $7 million is usually enough to attract the biggest names on the tour, but being part of the newly formed FedEx playoffs makes it a must-play all the top golfers in the world.
- BMW Championship
-
Course: Cog Hill Country Club, Dubsdread Course
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Yardage: 7,166The top 70 Points Leaders after the Deutsche Bank Championship head in to the BMW Championship hosted by Cog Hill Country Club. This tournament is brand new to the PGA Tour and replaces the Western Open.
The competition only gets stiffer and tighter as the field is shrunken to 70 of the best golfers in the world. The Dubsdread Course of Cog Hill CC is known for its dense shrubbery and tall grass roughs It favors players with good accuracy who exercise solid ball control and soft landings.
- The Tour Championship
-
Course: East Lake Golf Club
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Yardage: 7,112After the BMW Championships, the field is funneled down to the top 30 Point Leaders. The final tournament of the playoffs gets tense, with the winner taking home $10 million in prize money and the trophy.
East Lake Golf Club is unique because it is played on Zoysia grass. The course will bury golfers for making even the tiniest mistakes. Sand bunkers flank the greens and fairway corners throughout this beautiful course. Players with long, true drives can excel on this course as long as they set themselves up with an honest shot at the green.
- World Golf Championships
-
The World Golf Championships consists of three annual events for male professional golfers. The intention of such events is to attract a large spectrum of golfers from around the globe to compete on one stage, creating more international competition.
What attracts players to these tournaments is the sizeable purses of the tournaments and the bevy of Official World Golf Ranking Points available. The tournaments in the WGC offer 35-39 points, which is the most points offered outside of the four majors.
The three events of the World Golf Championship are the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, the WGC-CA Championship and the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. They have all been dominated in recent years by Tiger Woods.
- WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships
-
Course: The Gallery Golf Club
Location: Marana, Arizona
Yardage: 7,351Previously held in Australia and California, the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship moves to the scorching desert sun of Arizona in 2007. The Gallery Golf Club in Arizona has two courses. The North Course is the easier of the two and is preferred by high handicap golfers and women.
The South Course hosts the Accenture Match Play Championship. The course is relatively flat, though a number of soft rolling hills can victimize a good landing. Like most desert courses, players often take strokes for landing their balls out of bounds, which is fairly easy considering the boundary area’s proximity to the fairway.
Bunkers are strategically placed amidst the fairway to take away the prime areas to play the green. Not surprisingly, this desert course has a multitude of sand traps that guard the more favorable areas of the fairways.
The WGC-Accenture Championship is a knockout style match play tournament.
- WGC-CA Championship
-
Course: Blue Monster Course
Location: Doral, Florida
Yardage: 7,266If only all courses in the United States had such great names. Blue Monster Course becomes the new, permanent home of the WGC-CA Championship beginning in 2007. Previously the tournament had been hosted at various courses in the USA and Europe.
The Blue Monster has hosted PGA events for over 40 years. It is a typical Floridian course, known for long fairways, undulating greens, inconvenient water and frustrating bunker placement.
The WGC-CA Championship is a 72 hole stroke play tournament and invites the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings, the top 30 PGA Tour players, top 20 European Tour players and a handful of players from the Asian tours. There is a huge $8 million purse as well.
- WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
-
Course: Firestone Country Club
Location: Akron, Ohio
Yardage: 7,400The WGC-Bridgestone Invitational takes the place of the WGC-NEC Invitational that succeeded the World Series of Golf in 1999. With the sponsorship changing hands, the tournament will find itself at Firestone Country Club till 2012.
The Firestone Country Club is unfortunately land marked by a hideously gigantic ball and tee in the parking lot. Once you get past that, however, the club offers three courses of substantial length and difficulty. They are the North, West and South Courses respectively.
The South course, is keenly known as The Monster. The length of the holes is ridiculous. The sixteenth hole is a 667 par-5 that once crushed Arnold Palmer with a triple bogey. The North course is well known for the bodies of water that make it remarkably difficult to play. The West course is long, but not as difficult as the treacherous South course.
The top 50 players on the Official World Golf Rankings are invited to play, as well as playing members of the President Cup and Ryder Cup teams. Specific tournament winners from the Australian and Asian tours are also invited to participate.
The small field of 75 players will participate in a 72 hole stroke play tournament. The purse is $8 million.
