Wyndham Championship to Win
Tee-off:  8/20/2009

No Tiger Woods.  No Y.E. Yang.  No Phil Mickelson.  No Vijay Singh.

Gamblers would think that there was no reason to bet the Wyndham Championship this week, but that’s not the case.  Because none of the above players are playing in the Wyndham Championship, the odds on almost everybody are pretty good.

That make finding the winner of the Wyndham a challenge, but it could be a profitable challenge.

Let’s take a look at some of the contenders to win the Wyndham Championship this week.

Wyndham Championship To Win

  1. Michael Letzig +2000 - - I’m picking Michael Letzig to win even though he hasn’t played competitively in a couple of weeks.  He finished 8th in the RBC Canadian Open and 6th in the Buick Open.  Letzig has a really nice swing and he should be fresh after letting the name players beat each other up the past two weeks.  Letzig should be a tough guy to beat at Wyndham.

  1. Lucas Glover +1500 - - The U.S. Open Champion finished 6th in last week’s PGA Championship.  He has posted top 25 finishes at Greensboro, NC the last four times he has played the course.  Glover has been consistent all year and the PGA Championship proves that his swing is back.

  1. Sergio Garcia +1500 - - I’m giving Sergio a bigger chance to win than a lot of other golf betting fans.  Yes, Garcia is the favorite in the sportsbook, along with Lucas Glover, but Sergio has been awful, almost god awful, in 2009.  He missed the cut at the USPGA last week and really doesn’t know the Sedgefield Country Club course as well as some others in here, but hey, Sergio is coming to play because he feels he can win.  Who knows?  Maybe, he finds his swing in this.

  1. David Toms +2000 - - Toms has three runner-up finishes in 2009 but no victories.  He’s second on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy and 3rd in scoring average.  That’s impressive enough for me to say that at the 20 to 1 odds, he deserves serious consideration for a win wager this week.

  1. Tim Clark +1800- - Clark’s 16th place finish at the USPGA last week means that he’s on top of his game.  He has tied for 6th at Greensboro, NC in two of his last three tournaments there.  His top 5 ranking in scoring average on the PGA Tour only adds to the belief that he has a shot to win the Wyndham.

  1. Jonathan Byrd +5000 - - Byrd should probably be the long shot pick in this but he actually has a better chance at winning then the defending champion, Carl Petterson.  So, Petterson, at lower odds, becomes the long shot bet.  Byrd has four top 25 finishes at Greensboro in five career starts.  Because he can get hot at any moment, he might be the biggest overlay in the sportsbook to win the Wyndham Championship

Best Long Shot

Carl Petterson +4000 - - Petterson is having a disastrous year, but he did win this tournament in 2008 and hasn’t shot worse than a 68 in his last four rounds on this course.  If Petterson is going to salvage 2009 at all, he will probably do it at Greensboro, NC in the Wyndham Challenge.
