Golf: Deutsche Bank To Win
Tee-off: 9/3/2009
Tiger couldn’t close the deal last Sunday in The Barclays, but is still in first place in the FedEx Cup point’s standings. El Tigre is going to have his hands full again as some of the best golfers in the world will line up for the second tournament of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Since Tiger hasn’t been all that great in his last two tournaments, finishing second both times, one would think that Tiger would go up in odds. That’s not the case. Once again, El Tigre is a less than 2 to 1 favorite to win a tournament in the BetUS online sportsbook. At +150, Tiger is a huge favorite in the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Let’s take a look at Tiger’s chances as well as the chances of some other golfers to win the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Golf: Deutsche Bank Championship To Win
1. Padraig Harrington +1500 - - The bad news, of course, is that Paddy couldn’t find a way to take home The Barclays trophy. The good news is that Paddy found a way not to score a triple-bogey on any hole this past Sunday. When Paddy gets hot, gamblers had better pay attention and Paddy is hot right now.
2. Tiger Woods +150 - - Tiger has failed to win in his last two tournaments at roughly the same odds bettors are getting on him in the Deutsche Bank Championship. Is that surprising? Yes, actually it is because El Tigre usually brings it home when he can. The chinks are definitely in the armor, but if there is any golfer on the planet who could turn it around at a moments notice, it’s Tiger. I hate taking short odds, but the day I abandon ship is the day that Woods will come home with a victory.
3. Steve Stricker +2500 - - Until Slocum hit that 21 ft birdie on the 18th, Stricker had to have been feeling pretty good about himself. He had a one stroke lead over Tiger, Paddy and Ernie Els and who was Heath Slocum? Nobody that Stricker couldn’t handle, but Slocum did hit the shot putting the pressure on Steve who failed at his birdie attempt. Hey, it happens. Stricker can string together a number of good tournaments. At the odds, he’s still a good play even though he failed when things got tough this past Sunday.
4. Ernie Els +2000 - - Els has four top tens in his last six starts and tied for 3rd last year at TPC Boston. Ernie could definitely prove difficult in this tournament if he can keep his swing going. Last Sunday, he finished 2nd in The Barclays. I can’t fault any bettor looking to make a score on Els in the Deutsche Bank Championship.
5. Steve Marino +7000 - - At the odds, Marino qualifies as a huge long shot in the Deutsche Bank Championship. I actually believe a different golfer, going off at higher odds, also has a chance. Well, I have to put Marino somewhere even though he melted down in front of everyone’s eyes on Sunday. He tied for 10th at TPC Boston in 2008 and eight of his last ten rounds on the course have been par or better. He’s a flyer but he’s a flyer with a shot.
6. Jim Furyk +3500 - - Furyk is coming up to a good tournament. Even though he hasn’t won since 2007, he did finish tied for 7th last year at TPC Boston and has finished in the Top 15 in his last 7 FedEx Cup Playoff Tournaments. Furyk could be a tough guy to look past in this, but that streak of non-victories is worrisome.
Best Long Shot
Heath Slocum +8500 - - Sometimes a golfer can make a defining shot and they never look back. That could be the case with Heath Slocum who’s 21 ft birdie on the 18th this past Sunday in The Barclays was easily the greatest shot he’s ever made. Who says he can’t keep it going? Golfers get hot and stay hot sometimes. At the golf odds, Slocum is definitely worth a bet.
