Breeders' Cup Wagering Tips

For the first time in its history the Breeders’ Cup will split two days between the filly and mare races and the rest of the races.  That means that on October 24th all races strictly for females will be run.  Then, on October 25th the rest of the Breeders’ Cup races, including the $5,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Classic will be run.

What does this mean to BetUS online racebook fans?  It means that we have to have a plan going into both days.  For instance, if we decide that our bank roll is going to be $2,000 for the Breeders’ Cup, which isn’t out of the question considering it’s the biggest two days in horse racing, then we will probably want to use $1,000 for October 24th and then $1,000 for October 25th.

Now, out of that $1,000 on each day it is imperative that we make hard decisions.  For instance, do we want to play every race?  Do we want to pick a horse in each race to put a win and place bet on?  Do we want to concentrate on Pick 3’s?  Pick 4’s or the Pick 6?

What about exactas and trifectas?  Because of the nature of the Breeders’ Cup, and the schedule of races this year, it’s important that we go into each day with a strategy.  Let’s say that we will attempt to win rolling Pick 3’s this year and not to put up too much of our money on horses to win and place.

If that’s the case, then we will want to handicap accordingly.  When making a win bet, we look for the horse that can win.  When making a Pick 3 wager, we look for long shots that could sneak into the Pick 3.

Let’s say that we will go for the big Pick 4 swing.  If we do that, then we will need to first decide which Pick 4, the early or late Pick 4, should pay out higher and then handicap accordingly.

Unlike most races where we handicap first and then decide what online bets to make, it’s important to understand that the Breeders’ Cup is so full of good horses in every race, that it makes more sense to decide what wager you wish to make first.  Then, you adjust your handicapping to suit that wager.

Yes, it’s a revolutionary idea in some respects, but that’s horse racing and that’s the Breeders’ Cup!
