It’s the little things in online poker that count

There are many misconceptions with poker players that you have to be a great player to make money or you have to know tons about the game. Don’t get me wrong, knowing a lot about any subject is always a help but then again, sometimes knowledge can be a hindrance as well. If you have knowledge that is distorting your views in a negative way or holding you back from optimising your earn rate then this is precisely the type of knowledge that I am referring to.
It is for this reason why it is often advantageous to train people up from scratch and this is also why many financial institutions operate in exactly the same way. When you train someone up from scratch then they are not infested with biased views and opinions and everything that they are learning is now pertinent to them making money.
But you can become a far better poker player simply by paying attention to the little things that are not connected with the actual playing of the hands. If you remember that poker is akin to business then you need to think about running that business in a proper and professional way.
This means being disciplined when it comes to making decisions. If you can be disciplined about making decisions when always risking money then you will certainly be one step ahead of millions of players out there who make many decisions at the poker table with a “what the hell” type of attitude.
I have already spoken about money management in a previous article but it is always worth repeating. Bad money management skills and poor bankroll control will ultimately lead to your demise or at the very least, put you under financial pressure. This is another crucial factor that has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual playing of the hands themselves.
Emotional stability is another key factor as well, people are mainly not programmed to accept negative events in their life and then brush them off without it affecting their mindset. But yet you will be swamped with negative events in your poker career with bad beats and losing sessions coming at you from all angles. How you handle this will go a long way towards you being successful at poker!
When you factor in picking and choosing soft opponents or opponents who you can beat and beatable games then it is clear to see that many of the factors that contribute towards playing poker successfully have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the playing of the hands. But yet this does not prevent millions of poker players from constantly studying poker theory even though their other poker playing skills are left unattended.
